چکیده

Electrospinning is a process in which solid fibers are produced from a polymeric fluid stream ~solution or melt! delivered through a millimeter-scale nozzle. The solid fibers are notable for their very small diameters ~,1 mm!. Recent experiments demonstrate that an essential mechanism of electrospinning is a rapidly whipping fluid jet. This series of papers analyzes the mechanics of this whipping jet by studying the instability of an electrically forced fluid jet with increasing field strength. An asymptotic approximation of the equations of electrohydrodynamics is developed so that quantitative comparisons with experiments can be carried out. The approximation governs both long wavelength axisymmetric distortions of the jet, as well as long wavelength oscillations of the centerline of the jet. Three different instabilities are identified: the classical ~axisymmetric! Rayleigh instability, and electric field induced axisymmetric and whipping instabilities. At increasing field strengths, the electrical instabilities are enhanced whereas the Rayleigh instability is suppressed. Which instability dominates depends strongly on the surface charge density and radius of the jet. The physical mechanisms for the instability are discussed in the various possible limits. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. @DOI: 10.1063/1.1383791#

Electrospinning of liquid jets

A very thin liquid jets can be obtained using electric fields. The electrically-driven bending instability of the jet enormously increases the jet elongation path and effectively leads to its tinning by very large ratios and can be used to produce nanofibres. The mechanism of electro-thinning of liquid jets, discovered almost one century ago, is yet not fully understood. In the following study ...

Experiments and modelling of electrospinning process

Very thin liquid jets can be obtained using electric field, whereas an electrically-driven bending instability occurs that enormously increases the jet path and effectively leads to its thinning by very large ratios, enabling the production of nanometre size fibres. This mechanism, although it was discovered almost one century ago, is not yet fully understood. In the following study, experiment...

Unconfined, melt edge electrospinning from multiple, spontaneous, self-organized polymer jets

Commercial grade polyethylene is melt electrospun from a thin film of unconfined molten polymer on a heated, electrically-grounded plate. Under the influence of an applied electric field, the melt spontaneously forms fingering perturbations at the plate edge which then evolve into emitting fiber-forming jets. Jet-to-jet spacing (∼5mm), which is dependent on the applied voltage amplitude, is in ...

Edge electrospinning for high throughput production of quality nanofibers.

A novel, simple geometry for high throughput electrospinning from a bowl edge is presented that utilizes a vessel filled with a polymer solution and a concentric cylindrical collector. Successful fiber formation is presented for two different polymer systems with differing solution viscosity and solvent volatility. The process of jet initiation, resultant fiber morphology and fiber production r...
